Now that that’s out of the way, I want to tell you also that I am not a doctor. BUT, I have been a biology/life science teacher for nearly 20 years. So I do have a fair amount of professional knowledge about the human body. The following information is my opinion based on my own scientific knowledge.
Do you use lavender essential oil on your little ones to help with bedtime? I do and here’s why…………….
I don’t know if essential oils really work. I mean I do not have any scientific proof. There are lots of opinions out there. I have read and considered many, but this is what I do know……….
Human smell affects a large area of the brain, including memory and emotion. Scientists say that memory of smells can last 15 years in between smells. Have you ever smelled something unexpectedly and suddenly you were right back in the moment? Maybe it was the smell of your Grandma’s baking, or the scent of an old flame? Whatever it was, you immediately thought of that person or place. Had those exact same feelings all over again. It’s because of chemicals in your brain that are triggered by that experience. Good or bad, you’ll feel that emotion again. It’s why we like that new car smell. It releases endorphins in your brain that make you happy! If nothing else, using essential oils when experiencing certain emotions creates association. A sort of brain washing if you will. So anytime my son smells lavender, he is right back in that moment. He is safe, and warm, and happy. He is surrounded by a parent’s protection and love. He will have the relaxed carefree feeling of being 5 years old and in his momma’s arms. Will it work? I don’t know, but if it does I am giving him a precious gift he will carry with him the rest of his life. Anytime he’s stressed, or having a hard time going to sleep, if he smells the smell of lavender, he will remember those feelings. I won’t always be able to protect him from life’s burden. The challenges of being a man will surely find him, but he will always be one sniff away from being my little boy.
If you want to geek out with me, here’s a cool little article about the science of smell.
Also, I buy most of my essential oils from Eden’s Garden, though I am not affiliated with them in any way. I am just a happy customer!
